How to Build an Outhouse

In the olden times, indoor plumbing was non-existent so people required the need for an outhouse. Could you imagine what it is like now if the smell was unpleasant back then? Here we will look at the fundamentals of how to build an outhouse.

First things first, you need to have a plan and choose a location that is far from your house as much as possible. When you have selected a location for your outhouse, you can now proceed with the construction.

Building The Foundation

Before building the interior, you first have to dig a ditch 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 and 5 feet deep. Start by building the wooden form of the outhouse. Construct a wooden ring for holding the concrete that will be put in.

Next, build a wooden platform measuring 4 feet and 10 inches with a center hole measuring 3 feet and 8 inches. Position them on the bottom of the ditch.

Another wooden structure 2 1/2 to 3 inches should be constructed. The concrete will be spilled above the ditch and will not be submerged into the bottom of the outhouse where the waste is going.

Then build the walls depending on the size that you want. 2 x 4’s is suggested.

Constructing the Seat

The next step on how to build an outhouse is to construct a wooden toilet seat. You also have the option to buy from the store but make sure that they are wooden seats for authenticity. Ensure that all your connections are reinforced from the walls to the ceiling.

You may also consider adding ventilation to your outhouse. To do this, use covered screens or a 4-inch vent. Another option will be to cut a hole in the door.

Ensuring Sanitation

In the past, most outhouses have a crescent moon on the door. You can use this pattern or choose another design.

When learning how to build an outhouse, you need to bear in mind that bugs and mosquitoes would be attracted to human waste so you need to devise a plan on how to keep the area clean.

Make sure that the seats are always covered. It would be much better for you to show off your outhouse rather than use them.

If your house does not enjoy the advantage of indoor plumbing, having an outhouse can help you stay healthy and free from bacterial infection. Learning how to build an outhouse is relatively easy and can be a memorable experience as well.
